From the Coppa del Mondo to the Mundialito: a successful launch or a missed opportunity for Italian women's football?

Long associated solely with men, women’s soccer began to gain recognition in the second half of the 20th century. Italy deserves credit for one of the first initiatives to establish an international competition, even though the sport was still largely hidden before the war (Dietschy 2010; Gozillon 2021). In 1968, a group of Turin businessmen created the Federazione Italiana di Calcio Femminile, followed two years later by the first unofficial women's world cup (Martini Rosso Cup), which foreshadowed the women's Mundialitos to come.
Now recognized and supported by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC: Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio), the sport has seen a steady increase in the number of female players over time, from around 150 in 1957 to more than 42,500 in 2024. How did these early sporting events contribute, or not, to the rise of calcio femminile?
Based on a thesis and research supported by FIFA, this article aims to trace the institutionalization of women's soccer in Italy from a socio-historical perspective and to place the role of these competitions in a more “comprehensive” approach (Vigarello 1988) approach, making these events one factor among others that can explain the cultural specificity of Latin women's soccer. An interview with a federal official, institutional archives, and a corpus based on reference works on the subject constitute the main materials for this work.
