Horses, rowing and donkeys. The sport in the Malaga of the XIX century
Keywords:
Malaga, XIX Century, sport history, social class, popular games.Abstract
At the beginning of the 19th century, the economic revival of industry and commerce made Malaga a recipient of new inhabitants coming from other áreas in the country, giving rise to great social contradictions between a wealthy middle class and a great gran masa of manual workers and peasants, divided by the river Gudalmedina. This article studies the social role played by the main families settled in Malaga, who copied foreign customs and habits -mainly the English ones-, and among them the a taste for sport, even using the English Word ton ame it. The first sports practised by the upper classes wer aquatic games, horse riding, swimming contests and tennis. The working class played traditional and popular games, and instead of horse races they held donkey and fishing snack races.
