During the 16th century and increasing secularisation leads to a rediscovery of human body and subsequently to the interest in health maintenance. In such a historical context, Crisóbal Méndez’s work is fascinating for being the first one dealing with physical exercise as a means to improve the health of the body, and hence that of the soul. He writes his book with a twofold aim: to show the great benefits obtained through the practice of physical exercise and to advise on such practice according to different factors, such as age, gender, climate, season of the year, etc., offering tips for use and insisting on its importance for each stage and for the treatment of illnessess.
