Abstract

The text deals with sports activities among the mexica, the peoples living under the rule of Tenochticlan at the arrival of the Spanish conquerors. Among them state education provided body and pre-military training including several games that today would be called sports, such as the ball game, that was mandatory for the students.

The Spanish chronicles tell the great development of medicine, which, with its advanced knowledge of physiology and its emphasis on body higiene was a precedent of todays’s sports medicine. Great emphasis was also puto n play and leisure activities, such as acrobatics and hunting, and specially running, with was used for social promotion.
