Abstract

In this article we explain the evolutionary path of the line of research that focuses on the study of sports events. Initially, 80’s and 90’s, studies have looked up mainly on the analysis, after the event, of the impacts that they provided in the host cities and destinations. At the turn of the century, and as a turning point in organizing the Olympic Games in Sydney, has evolved to a new approach to develope research. A new research focus appeared in the literature, with emphasis on leveraging the benefits of the event. This body of knowledge is based on qualitative studies and analyzes the most effective strategies, as well as how to plan them and exploit them to allow the host communities to maximize the benefits of an event. In this perspective, we advocate that the strategic leverage in the management of sporting events can contribute to use sports as a means to improve the quality of life of individuals and community development.
