The use of LiDAR technology to generate point clouds in construction is growing, but professional equipment is costly and limited to large projects. The integration of LiDAR in common devices like iPhones and iPads Pro offers an affordable alternative, albeit with lower performance.
This study compares three data collection methods in built environments: traditional measurement, scanning with professional LiDAR, and scanning with Apple devices (5 m range). Results indicate that while Apple devices are less accurate, they can produce sufficiently useful point clouds for small to medium projects, provided they are complemented with traditional measurements.
It concludes that Apple devices with LiDAR are an effective tool for less demanding settings, offering a practical solution for quick and economical surveys with acceptable accuracy.
