A comparative study of urban heat island assessment methodologies

Global warming is increasingly studied, focusing on solutions to mitigate its impact on thermal comfort in cities and buildings. However, many proposals rely on outdated climate data. The urban heat island effect, causing temperature differences of up to 5°C between urban centers and rural areas, is well-documented in large cities like Madrid or Málaga. Yet, it is unclear if smaller cities like Cáceres, with less traffic, pollution, and population density, experience similar effects.
This study examines urban heat islands in Cáceres using historical climate data and updated local measurements. Urban transects were conducted at different times of the day, complemented by citizen monitoring networks and advanced techniques like kriging interpolation, with results visualized in QGIS software.
The conclusions compare methodologies, assessing their precision, temporal range, and validity. Some methods validate others, showcasing technological advancements in data collection and the efficacy of modern techniques. This approach identifies potential heat islands and supports more effective energy solutions.
