The transformation of the south of Tenerife (1960–2018)

From the 1960s onwards, the tourist boom arrived in the south of the island of Tenerife, thanks to the approval of urban development plans in favour of urban-tourist expansion. The southern coastline underwent a major structural transformation that involved the reclassification of rural land into land for development for tourist-residential use and the substitution of certain economic activities, such as agriculture, in order to create a large international tourist centre. This process of production of leisure spaces implies a revaluation of the land and a genesis in the changes in land use.
For this reason, this paper aims to analyse the evolution of the tourist model in the south of Tenerife, through the analysis of its four evolutionary stages, observing the classification and qualification of the land, and the urban plans developed in the territory in order to examine how this economic activity has currently caused a territorial polarisation that affects the island as a whole.
