Farther for less: Subsidized mobility and urban decline in the Madrid periphery
The case of Aranjuez

This paper analyses the impact of transport subsidies in the city of Aranjuez, evaluating their influence on mobility patterns, consumption habits, and sense of belonging. Through a mixed-method approach combining surveys, fieldwork, and a focus group, the study identifies dynamics that characterize this municipality as a potential commuter town on the metropolitan outskirts of Madrid. The results show an intensive use of the transport pass among young people, which facilitates access to external opportunities but also reinforces disconnection from the local environment. However, the study reveals that it is not only mobility itself what weakens belonging, but also the limited offer of leisure, commerce, and employment opportunities available in Aranjuez. Despite a generally positive perception of the municipality, especially among adults, a strong desire to leave is widespread among the youth. The research concludes that the transport pass functions as an ambivalent tool: while it enhances connectivity, in the absence of an effective urban strategy, it perpetuates the municipality’s functional subordination.
