Abstract

This article examines the scientific production on citizen participation in urban regeneration through a bibliometric analysis in the Scopus database (1994–2024). The systematic search identified 174 articles, with no previous bibliometric studies in this field. The methodology included the use of Bibliometrix and VOSviewer to characterize the literature and analyze annual productivity, geographical distribution, authors, journals, and the most cited articles.

The results show that this is an emerging sub-line within urban research, with sustained growth since 2016, linked to sustainability, collaborative governance, and resilience. The findings highlight the relevance of community participation and social capital, while also pointing out tensions with neoliberal approaches and risks of gentrification.

The keyword analysis identified 37 relevant terms, such as “research,” “communication,” and “energy efficiency.” The study concludes that citizen engagement must translate into real impacts on urban policies, fostering more inclusive and sustainable cities.
