Abstract
Based on the two senses of valuation of the material imagination proposed by Gaston Bachelard in his text Imagination and Matter, an analysis is made of a pair of contemporary works of architecture, the Salk Institute by Louis Kahn and the Brother Klaus Chapel by Peter Zumthor. The intention is to show how the concrete is one of the materials in architecture most apt for poetic creation and the stimulation of material imagination. For such an explanation a couple of concepts are introduced, the material gravitas and the aperion, from which it is tried to reveal in depth theu materiality of the works.
Finally, an experiment carried out with several pieces of concrete tries to work with the first ideas developed, in order to initiate, in a practical way, a path of exploration within the material imagination and the poetic creation of concrete.
