UNA CASA DE UNA PIEZA LAS CONCRETE HOUSES DE EDISON = A ONE-PIECE HOUSE EDISON’S CONCRETE HOUSES
Abstract
Abstract
In 1917, Thomas Edison patented a method for building affordable houses made of concrete, with a unique formwork and in a single molding operation. These houses were built in one piece totally made of concrete, from walls and floors to all the interior divisions and fixtures. Edison’s proposal offered many advantages, but also important technical problems due to the cost and complexity of formworks and concrete pouring. However, some prototypes and dwelling promotions were built using Edison’s method, many of which are still conserved. They constitute an example of the material possibilities in relation to the utopia of the one piece continuous house made out of concrete.
