El hormigón es sin lugar a dudas el material estructural que caracteriza el desarrollo de la ingeniería y la arquitectura del siglo XX. Junto al acero, que había revolucionado previamente la construcción del siglo XIX, siguen siendo hoy en día los materiales esenciales de toda construcción. El artículo presenta una selección de imágenes a modo de referencia visual y reflexiva sobre el origen y desarrollo histórico, las características, cualidades, posibilidades y potencialidades del hormigón como material estructural. Estas referencias transcurren desde los inicios del hormigón armado y las primeras patentas, las láminas delgadas, el hormigón pretensado y las estructuras prefabricadas, hasta los desarrollos y exploraciones y aplicaciones actuales, estructurales, arquitectónicas y artísticas
Abstract
Concrete is undoubtedly the structural material that characterizes the development of engineering and architecture in the 20th century. Together with steel, which had previously revolutionized construction in the 19th century, they continue to be the essential materials of any construction today. The article presents a selection of images as a visual and reflective reference on the origin and historical development, the characteristics, qualities, possibilities, and potentialities of concrete as a structural material. These references go from the beginnings of reinforced concrete and the first patents, thin plates, prestressed concrete, and prefabricated structures, to current structural, architectural, and artistic developments and explorations and applications.
