EL HORMIGÓN EN BÚSQUEDA DE FORMA: BARCOS, ÁRBOLES Y CASAS = CONCRETE LOOKING FOR SHAPE : SHIPS, TREES, HOUSES

Resumen

Si el pensamiento sobre la propia materialidad de la madera, la piedra, el acero o el vidrio ha invitado a dar forma a grandes obras en la historia de la arquitectura, no puede decirse lo mismo del hormigón. Desde muy pronto se vinculó la modernidad al uso del hormigón, sin embargo no se ahondó en su vocación material a la hora de contribuir a la aparición de su “buena forma”. A pesar de todo no pueden olvidarse los vaivenes que llevaron a emplear el hormigón en la construcción de barcos, casas (con la misma apariencia que las erigidas en madera y ladrillo) y hasta árboles artificiales. El nacimiento de la modernidad y la aparición del hormigón no fue una coincidencia, sino su causa. Pero en un sentido bien diferente al dado por la historiografía oficial.

Abstract

If the thought about the materiality of wood, stone, steel or glass has led us to give shape to great works in the history of architecture, we cannot say the same about concrete. From very early on, modernity and the use of concrete were linked. However, historical studies did not delve into its material vocation or its derivatives when it came to contributing to the appearance of its “good form”. The ups and downs that led to the use of concrete in the construction of boats, houses (with the same appearance as those built with  wood and brick) and even artificial trees, cannot be forgotten. The birth of modernity and the appearance of concrete was not a coincidence, but its cause. But in a very different sense from that given by the official historiography.
