Abstract

This research focuses on the case study of Torrevieja’s Relaxation Park, designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito.
The project is a paradigmatic example of the transformation and decline processes of iconic architecture projects in the context of tourist urbanism in Spain at the beginning of the 21st century. The project was conceived as a thermal wellness and contemplation complex linked to the surrounding landscape of the salt lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja. It took place at a time of economic euphoria and real estate speculation, in which architecture was used as a tool of symbolism and territorial marketing. However, the halting of construction work and its subsequent abandonment materialized the contradictions of an urban model based on formal exceptionalism and media visibility.
Through a qualitative methodology, combining the analysis of Torrevieja’s urban context, the design logic, and the administrative trajectory of the Relaxation Park, the research introduces the notion of “spectral artifact” to describe architectural projects that, despite having lost their original function, retain a symbolic and affective presence within the territory and collective memory. This conceptual category enables an understanding of how Ito’s project – initially conceived as a sensorial itinerary connecting body, water and landscape – became an anticipated ruin, embodying the tensions among modernity, representation, and obsolescence that characterize the post-industrial city. The study concludes that the Torrevieja case reveals the limits of spectacle-driven urbanism, while suggesting the potential to reinterpret such incomplete architectures as critical devices for reflecting on the cultural and social sustainability of contemporary architecture.
