Abstract:
Understanding complex urban societies only becomes possible when we study both the formal and the informal constructs of its functionality. One of the strongest tools for this task is the study of waste and its consequences. This brand of study helps us to describe how society’s demands outgrow the evolving body of legislations and, by defining waste as a resource, normalizes vastly dissimilar realities. Once placed in common ground, such cities as Tokyo, Mexico City, Madrid and Paris can accurately be studied, and their operational differences come to light. More important than merely reflect on these differences, we can now study how cities interact with their normative gaps. Our comparison now brings forward our innate capacity to adapt to these imperfections, and helps us understand how much informal constructs help societies continue to function efficiently, particularly in developing countries.
