Abstract:
This abstract of a doctoral thesis is a study about the morphology of growth in a Colombian intermediate city, based on the analysis of the urban development of the city of Tunja during the XX Century. The study aims to contribute to the understanding of the production and the transformation of the city and to its relationship with the urban actors. The morphological reading reveals clues to understand the society that makes the city inseparable from its political and ideological context, and which conditioned the formal concepts and the formal implemented options. This study aims to find the logic of occupation associated to hereditary models and to power relationships among urban agents. The following questions are answered: What are the urban growth models in Tunja and what is their relationship with the urban agents? What is the space-temporary expression and influence of the agents that construct the city? How was the urban periphery structured from a wide range of territory that was associated with low density and discontinuous growing as well as unoccupied lands? The study of urban history seeks to find answers to these questions which are likely to be useful in the formulation of policies, plans, and projects that modify contemporary problematic situations, and in turn, it is a constructive tool aiming to suggest the appropriate mechanisms in order to achieve this.
