Spain and the early francoism Olympic Games: the important thing was taking part
Keywords:
Spain, Olympic Games, Francoism, participation, political use.Abstract
Spain participated just in two Olympics between Los Angeles 1932 and Roma 1960: Londres 1948 and Helsinki 1952. The few participants, the poor performance results and officials and sportsmen declarations lead us to conclude that Spain went to the Olympics just to participate, given the low expectations. However, final aim was to improve international Spanish image in a sensitive political moment for Franco’s regime. This paper seeks to explore the historical importance of these Olympics for Spain. Historical analysis of official documents and press will result in a rigorous and documented study on Franco’s use of sport as a political tool after WWII.
