Consumo ilimitado, eficiencia y desigualdad urbana. Definición socioecológica del consumo urbano desde las perspectivas del marxismo y el metabolismo

Resumen
Las mejoras en la eficiencia de los sistemas urbanos pueden resultar insuficientes en la búsqueda de una ciudad más respetuosa con el medio natural si el consumo en el interior de las ciudades sigue creciendo sin control y, especialmente, si este incremento no es consecuencia directa del comportamiento de los consumidores. Para explicar cómo la estructura de la ciudad interviene en el consumo se recurre a dos formas diferentes de entender el espacio urbano. Por un lado el estudio del metabolismo urbano cuantifica los componentes que intervienen en el consumo, por otro, las interpretaciones marxistas de la ciudad tratan de explicar las estructuras sociales, políticas y económicas que lo condicionan. El resultado es una teoría conjunta que permite interpretar todos los fenómenos y actividades que engloba el término consumo, aglutinando tanto la dimensión ecológica de éste como los aspectos sociales y políticos que intervienen en el mismo.

Abstract
Improving the efficiency of urban systems may prove insufficient in the pursuit of a friendlier city with the environment if consumption within cities continues growing out of control and, in particular, if this increase is not a direct consequence of consumers’ behavior. For explaining how the structure of the city intervenes in consumption we can use two different ways of understanding urban space. On one hand urban metabolism quantifies the components involved in consumption, on the other Marxist interpretations of the city try to explain the social, political and economic structures that condition it. The result is a joint theory that allow us to interpret every phenomenon and activity within the term consumption and that bring together both ecological, political and social dimensions involved.
