Ladrillos madrileños tradicionales. El caso del ladrillo fino jabonero = Traditional Madrilenian Brick. Case Study of the “Fino Jabonero” Variety

Se plantea en este artículo una investigación sobre el origen  del término jabonero aplicado al ladrillo castellano durante los siglos XVIII y XIX. Sobre la base de un análisis de la bibliografía técnica coetánea, se establece la hipótesis de que este término hace referencia a las cualidades de la arcilla de la ribera del Tajo, utilizada como materia prima para la fabricación de este tipo de ladrillo. No obstante, se aprovecha la  indagación efectuada para dar noticia de algunos datos interesantes sobre éste y otros tipos de ladrillo utilizados en Madrid a lo largo de ambos siglos, y se termina planteando la cuestión de si sería posible conservar esta denominación para algunos ladrillos actuales.

Abstract

This article explores the origin of the term “jabonero” used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to refer to a type of
Castilian brick. Based on an analysis of contemporary engineering books, the author hypothesizes that the word was a metaphor for the properties of the Tagus River bank clay
used as a raw material to manufacture this material. The historical research conducted on the occasion revealed other interesting facts about this and other types of brick used in
Madrid in those two centuries, also reported here. The article ends on a question mark, asking whether the term might be conserved and used to distinguish certain kinds of modern brick.
